Honey Bee Swarms

Honey Bee Swarms and Removal

I do remove honey bee swarms but I do have a charge for doing so. There are many bee keepers in the area that will remove a swarm for free but I do not. If I wanted bees I would order a package of bees in the spring and save myself a lot of time and the expense of housing them unexpectedly. New swarms that are taken require feed and protein to get them started if they are to make it through the winter. Swarms taken during the dandelion bloom may not need as much feed but it will be added as a safety measure. Depending on the time of year a bee swarm will have to be treated for mites, fed protein and boiled sugar syrup, and given the equipment to grow. This money and time investment could be wasted if the bees do not make it through the winter. I do my best to keep the bees well fed and mite free but nature has a way of biting you in the butt.

Bees swarm for two reasons, one is reproduction and the other is called absconding. Reproduction of a bee hive is when the colony has grown to much for the space they inhabited. If a bee hive gets to crowed by brood or honey the workers will start to produce new queens. A new queen will force out the existing queen with a bunch of workers
