Soffits/ Eves and Wildlife

Although preventing snow and ice from building up on the roof is impossible. Keeping the gutters clean will help drain the water as the snow melts. If the gutters are full of leaves and other debris water can not drain properly and follow the ice openings into the roof line.

Rotting roof edges make it very easy for raccoons to enter into attics. The smell of rotted wood is appealing to a raccoon cause in nature it is a place to find food. Insects will lay eggs and hibernate in weathered wood. Carpenter ants also love moist wood for egg laying and burrowing into. Once inside the attic raccoon and squirrel will both nest inside of the soffit, while young will be inside of the attic due to warmer temperature. Most of the scratching you hear is a raccoon or squirrel moving the insulation to nest or just to move. Squirrel build a mound with insulation to nest in often close to the edge of the ceiling next to the soffit. Raccoon will pull insulation into the soffit to sleep on but will keep young inside the attic if cooler temperatures exist. Litters that are born late in the season maybe found inside the soffit.
